Core Competences, Experiences and Achievements in 2024

CINA South Sudan’s work and experiences with children and families affected by conflicts and disasters, the organization has developed qualities and uniqueness which lead CINA South Sudan’s definition of core competences and sector focus and to the development of strategic priorities related to those as described below:

Integrated Community Healthcare Program:

CINA works strategically in Jonglei (Bor, Twic East and Duk) to provide integrated community healthcare services in Panyagor Hospital, PHCCs and Islands in areas of integrated childhood illnesses, maternal and neonatal health, reproductive health, integrated Primary Health care, Health Promotion and Risk Communication and Community Engagement, including for COVID-19 and Cholera Vaccination campaigns, Disease Surveillance and EWARN reporting and curatives services within Panyagor Hospital, running 4 PHCCs in Twic East and supporting mobile and outreach services in 62 Islands in Twic East through Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) and Boma Health Initiative (BHI) approaches. CINA reached 23,470 with integrated community healthcare services from January 2021 to June 2022 as follows:

  • Reached and treated 7,180 children with integrated childhood illnesses.
  • Reached 4,350 mothers with integrated maternal healthcare services.
  • Reached 2,465 with health promotion and risk communication.
  • Trained and supported county Health Department with incentives.
  • Maintain the county hospital electricity with fuel for 2 years.

To enhance efficiency CINA has upgraded the capacity of the county hospital to provide blood transfusion services, improved quality laboratory diagnostic services, ultrasound diagnostic services and curative services through procurement and delivery of portable Ultrasound Machine, Hematology Analyzer (CBC) Machine, Blood Bank Fridge, Microscopes, various high-quality laboratory reagents and laboratory equipment, various Essential drugs, hospital beds, and renovated power supply system in Panyagor County hospital.

Development of Integrated Protection in Emergency and Resilience Program:

CINA started implementation of Child Protection Program in September 2011 as a response to child protection needs of returning communities in Bor, Twic East and Duk counties of Jonglei state following independence of South Sudan. This intervention followed child rights based approach and therefore the projects undertaken, the children outcomes achieved and lessons learned by the organization in the past 13 years have made the development of integrated child protection in emergency and resilience program a core competence of the organization. After being known as a specialized child protection agency for so long, CINA then integrated general protection and HLP programming, mobile protection teams, gender-based violence programming and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) interventions into its child protection and has now become a whole-protection agency. CINA delivered the following protection results from January 2021 to June 2024:

  • Reached 503 children with Child Protection Comprehensive Case Management Services.
  • Reached 45 children through Family tracing and re-unification.
  • Reached 602 through youth and adolescent programming.
  • Reached 83 recently established child protection social work force.
  • Reached 25,089 children and their caregivers with Psychosocial Support through CFS, schools and community mechanisms.
  • Reached 22,076 with Gender Based violence services including awareness raising, distribution of dignity kits and fuel efficient stoves, GBV case management.
  • Reached 632 women, girls and boys with GBV risk Mitigation and Prevention Services.
  • Reached 217 of mothers, fathers and caregivers through parenting programmes.
  • Reached 18,958 at-risk children and community members on EORE awareness raising and safety messaging.
  • Reached 12,658 with general protection awareness raising.
  • Reached 500 Persons with Specific Needs with referral support and Individual Protection Assistance (IPA) through cash transfer.
  • Established and supported 16 community-based protection structures on prevention of protection risks against vulnerable individuals in their community.
  • Built and rehabilitated 3 children friendly centers and 2 women and girl’s friendly spaces.
  • Construction and rehabilitation of the youth center in Malakal.

Integrated Livelihood Services:

As a national organization operating within a conflict fragile situation, CINA South Sudan embraced supporting local initiatives for livelihoods and resilience building for vulnerable households from its establishment. CINA has been implementing Building Resilience and Enhancing Livelihood Project in Awerial, Lakes State from 2019 to date and has achieved the following results from January 2021 to June 2022:

  • CINA supported 265 youth and women on improved livestock production through provision of animal health services and improved access to animal resources.
  • CINA facilitated increased crop production access to quality inputs and adoption of improved agricultural practices to 726 farmers (90 men, 614 women) comprising of youth and women from most vulnerable households through training of farmers and distribution of vegetables kits.
  • About 350 individuals (8 men, 292 women) were supported with enhanced access to financial services through village loans and saving association approaches.
  • CINA provided 660 farmers (135 m and 425 female) with improved access to value chain, appropriate post-harvest and processing technologies.

Integrated Education Services:

As a call to fulfil SDG 4 on education, CINA is committed to provide education services to the most vulnerable children who are facing challenges in accessing education services. CINA has been doing tremendous work in Lakes State most especially Awerial, Yirol East and Yirol West. CINA reached more than 25,000 school going age children with different services including 33 children living with disability after schools re-opened in April 2021 to June 2023:

  • Reached 1,544 IDP school ongoing age children were admitted in schools successfully.
  • Reached 14,227 school going children with COVID 19 and Psychosocial Support awareness raising in 15 schools, 370 on EORE Awareness raising.
  • Trained 110 teachers on Teaching Pedagogy Psychosocial Support, 45 on MHPSS and PFA, positive discipline, lessons planning and child safeguarding.
  • Renovation of 4 school classrooms and construction of 4 pit latrines.
  • Supported 33 children with disabilities with assistive devices.
  • Established 84 radio listening groups in schools.
  • Supported 13,921 students who were approved for cash transfers.
  • Conducted 40 sessions on community mobilization and engagement on importance of girls’ education and dangers of girl marriage.
  • Supported 8 secondary schools with capitation grants.
  • Reached 184 children with Pastoralist Education Programme services in two cattle camps and these children were taught by 4 teachers.
