A Journey Interrupted by Conflict

Fifteen-year-old Rita Simon Owor once dreamed of becoming a teacher. But when war broke out in Sudan in early 2024, her education came to a sudden halt. Forced to flee with her family, Rita arrived in Wadakona, South Sudan in August 2025 after a long and difficult journey.

“I didn’t want to leave because I wanted to continue learning,” Rita recalls. “But because of the fighting, we had no choice.”

Despite her determination, Rita faced new challenges in her host community. The nearest schools were far away and unaffordable for her family, leaving her out of school for over a year.

A New Beginning Through Radio Learning

In April 2025, hope returned when Community in Need Aid (CINA), with support from UNICEF, launched a non-formal radio learning center in Pamer. The initiative was part of a broader effort to reach returnee and refugee children in areas without access to formal education.

“One evening, I heard a megaphone announcement about a school starting in our area,” said Rita. “I was so happy. The next morning, I rushed to register.”

Rita was placed in Level II, equivalent to Primary 4–5, and received learning materials to begin her studies in English, Mathematics, and Science.

Learning in the Face of Adversity

The radio learning program uses pre-recorded lessons delivered via portable radios, facilitated by trained community volunteers. Classes are held in open-air spaces or temporary shelters, making education accessible even in the most remote areas.

The Pamer center has already enrolled 141 learners (74 girls and 67 boys), with more children eager to join. CINA is working with the community to expand the program and accommodate the growing demand.

Rebuilding Futures, One Lesson at a Time

Rita’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of children and the impact of community-driven solutions. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of CINA, UNICEF, and the local community, children like Rita are reclaiming their right to education and building brighter futures.
